Winner of the 1981 Nobel Prize in Medicine for his work on the visual area of the cerebral cortex. After studying medicine at Stockholm’s Karolinska Institute, he went on give classes in physiology at John Hopkins and Harvard universities. A former chancellor of Rockefeller University, New York, he is currently General Secretary of the Human Frontier Science Program, supporting interdisciplinary collaboration in the life sciences.
