Regina Barzilay is School of Engineering Distinguished Professor for AI and Health in the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. A MacArthur Fellow, she also serves as the AI Faculty Lead at the Jameel Clinic, an MIT center for machine learning and health. Her research focuses on developing machine learning methods for drug discovery and clinical applications of artificial intelligence. In the latter area, she works with data from cancer patients to build models of disease progression and prevent over-treatment, as well as using deep learning models in mammogram assessment focusing on early cancer detection. Among other distinctions, she holds the AAAI Squirrel AI Award for Artificial Intelligence for the Benefit of Humanity and the 2025 Frances E. Allen Medal of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE).
