Born in Toronto (Canada), Leila Josefowicz trained at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia (United States).
Composers like John Adams, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Colin Matthews and Steven Mackey have written violin concertos especially for her. In March 2015, she gave the world premiere of Adams’ Scheherazade.2 with the New York Philharmonic, following on from the previous year’s premiere with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra of Duende – The Dark Notes, composed for her by Luca Francesconi.
She has performed with the Chicago, Cincinnati, Baltimore and Melbourne symphony orchestras, Ottawa’s National Arts Centre Orchestra, and the Orquesta y Coro Nacionales de España, among other ensembles. In 2014, her recording of Esa-Pekka Salonen’s Violin Concerto with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra was nominated for a Grammy Award.
