Darío Villanueva is Emeritus Professor of Literary Theory and Comparative Literature at the University of Santiago de Compostela and a member of the Real Academia Española, where he served as secretary and director between 2010 and 2019. Author of over 300 articles on theory, criticism, comparative literature, linguistic pragmatics, and language and society in Spanish and international journals, he has served as rector of the University of Santiago de Compostela, president of the Instituto de España and a member of the Council of State. His extensive bibliography includes such titles as Trayectoria de la novela hispanoamericana actual (with J. M. Viña Liste), Teoría del realismo literario, Introducing Comparative Literature. New Trends and Applications (with César Domínguez and Haun Saussy), Les galaxies de la rhétorique. Les puissants satellites du littéraire and El atropello a la Razón. He holds honorary doctorates from fourteen universities on three continents and belongs to nine academies of the Spanish language.
