Director of the Institute of Neuropathology at the University Hospital of Zurich (Switzerland). His research focuses on the pathogenesis of prion neuroinvasion and of the progression of malignant brain tumors. In the first case, he discovered that prions may help to maintain the myelin of peripheral nerves, a crucial factor in neurodegenerative conditions. In the second, he is working to identify new oncogenes implicated in tumors. Past president of the Swiss Society of Neuropathology and a Fellow of Britain’s Royal College of Pathology.
