Managing Director of the Barbican Centre (London) since 2007, he has been director of the BBC Proms (1996-2007), editor of Early Music (1983-1992), and a music critic for The New Yorker, The Times and The Observer. He was appointed Controller of BBC Radio 3 in 1992, and was responsible for the award-winning seasons Fairest Isle and Sounding the Century.
He oversaw the BBC’s programming for the Millennium, and ran its Live Events and TV Classical Music departments.
Author of books on Bach, Mozart, Simon Rattle, the BBC Symphony Orchestra and early music.
