Director of the Red Sea Research Center and holds the Tarek Ahmed Juffali Research Chair in Red Sea Ecology at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology. Until 2014, he was Director of the UWA Oceans Institute at the University of Western Australia and a Research Professor of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) in the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (IMEDEA).
His research focuses on understanding the impacts of global change in marine ecosystems, addressing all components, from microbes to megafauna. This research involves two nodes of interest: one on the metabolic and elemental budgets of marine ecosystems and their connectivity in space, and the other on the stability and dynamics of marine habitats and the maintenance of biodiversity.
Among his distinctions are the 2016 Vladimir Ivanovich Vernadsky Medal of the European Geosciences Union, the Alejandro Malaspina National Research Award, and the Prix d’Excellence of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES). He holds honorary doctorates from the universities of Quebec in Montreal (Canada) and Utrecht (Netherlands).
